The Direct Accountability Program is an alternative to prosecution for eligible individuals over the age of 18 who have been charged with minor criminal offences. The program involves accused persons being held accountable through community-based sanctions. Referrals are received from the Crown office.
The five programs held at the John Howard Society are:
Stop Shop Theft Program
Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program
Anger Management Program
Anger and Substance Awareness Program
Counselling, Support, and Intervention Program (“CSI”)
Individuals referred to these programs have been assessed to benefit from an opportunity to address the problematic thinking, feelings and behaviour that has led to their involvement with the criminal justice system.
This program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General.
