Mission Statement

Effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes.

History

The John Howard Society of London and District, founded in 1947, was the second branch of the John Howard Society in the province of Ontario. The branch was operated by a group of dedicated citizen volunteers guided by representatives from the Toronto group until, in 1951, the first professional staff member was appointed. In 1953, the John Howard Society of London and District became a financially participating member of the “Community Chest of London,” now known as the United Way Elgin Middlesex.

For decades, the John Howard Society of London and District has provided a continuum of care for individuals who have become involved in the Criminal Justice System. Since its existence in the community, the John Howard Society of London and District has broadened its activities to include all phases of the correctional process on a spectrum from prevention to arrest, bail, detention, aftercare and record suspension. Our agency plays an increasingly important role in prevention, family support and public education.
